Eight ways I can help

Pick the problem closest to what you're dealing with. Most engagements end up touching two or three of these at once.

How I Work

Diagnose. Fix. Train. Sustain.

The same discipline applied to a vehicle fault, applied to a business: no guesswork, no generic templates: evidence first, then a fix that holds.

STEP 01

Diagnose

On-site assessment, data review and root cause analysis to isolate the true problem, not the symptom.

STEP 02

Fix

Practical corrective action plans with owners, deadlines and measurable targets, implemented alongside your team.

STEP 03

Train

Facilitated training that transfers the capability to your people, so improvements don't leave when I do.

STEP 04

Sustain

Follow-up audits, KPI tracking and reporting to confirm the fix holds and the gains compound.

About Mahesh

27+ years where OEM standards meet the workshop floor

An independent automotive consultant based in Johannesburg, working across South Africa and Sub-Saharan Africa.

I started on the workshop floor, not in a boardroom. Technician-level diagnostics were the foundation, and understanding a vehicle fault before trying to fix a business problem is a habit that's stayed with me for 27 years since.

From there the work moved into national warranty auditing for BMW across Sub-Saharan Africa, then into aftersales management, homologation and market entry. Each step added a layer without replacing the last one, which is why I still open an engagement the way a technician opens a job card: find the actual fault before proposing a fix.

I've since worked inside legacy OEM systems and inside new Chinese entrants building networks from zero, a rarer combination than it sounds. Most consultants have one or the other, either the audit discipline of an established brand or the speed a new-energy start-up needs. Whichever side of that you're on, I've sat on the same side of the table.

Today that means testing vehicles for African conditions, preparing launches, clearing warranty backlogs, training teams and helping new brands enter the market. Hands-on execution, not a set of recommendations handed over at the end.

Service 01 · Testing & Validation

Proven on African roads before it reaches your customers

Africa breaks vehicles that pass every test elsewhere. I test OEM vehicles (EV, NEV and ICE) in the real conditions they will face across South Africa and Sub-Saharan Africa, and iron out every problem before homologation.

What's Included

Six ways vehicles get proven for African conditions

Terrain

Terrain & Road-Condition Testing

Gravel, corrugated and potholed roads, urban stop-start, highway cruising and off-road routes, assessing durability, suspension, NVH, dust and water ingress, underbody protection and load/towing behaviour.

Climate

Altitude & Climate Testing

Johannesburg sits at roughly 1,750 metres, and altitude changes how an engine breathes. Power delivery, cooling and turbo behaviour get tested there, then again in coastal humidity and heat, plus a winter cold-start check and a look at how the vehicle tolerates local fuel quality.

Compliance

Pre-Homologation Problem Resolution

Structured defect logging, root cause analysis and direct factory engineering feedback to close out every issue found in testing before NRCS approval and SANS compliance.

EV

EV Range & Efficiency Validation

Manufacturer range figures rarely survive a Highveld commute. Real-world testing across highway, urban, altitude and temperature conditions replaces them with numbers that hold up, covering energy consumption, regenerative braking and honest range.

Storage

Bond Store & Storage Vehicle Maintenance

Structured maintenance programmes for vehicles at bonded warehouses, ports and storage yards: inspections, EV and 12V battery maintenance, PDI execution and dispatch-ready condition reporting.

Local Fit

Service Schedules & Local Market Adaptation

An OEM maintenance schedule built for Europe rarely survives African dust and fuel quality unchanged. Adapting it properly means resetting service intervals, parts basket pricing and service plan costing for local roads.

Why It Matters

Testing elsewhere doesn't predict failure here

A vehicle validated in Europe or East Asia can still fail on a Free State gravel road, struggle with Highveld altitude, or overheat in a Durban traffic jam. Every test is run against structured pass/fail criteria, with defects logged and routed directly back to factory engineering, not buried in a generic report.

Suited to OEMs preparing a right-hand-drive or Africa-market variant, importers validating a new model before committing to volume, and EV/NEV brands needing honest local range and charging figures ahead of launch.

Service 02 · Launch Management

Cradle-to-grave launch execution, alongside your marketing team

From PDI process design to press fleets, influencer drives and dealer readiness: full launch management or standalone support for the parts you need covered.

What's Included

Three ways to launch with confidence

Press & PDI

New Model Launch Preparation: Press & PDI

End-to-end launch readiness: PDI process development, press and media fleet preparation, demo vehicle standards, launch event technical support, dealer launch training and accessory fitment sign-off.

Full Launch

Full Vehicle Launch Management: Cradle to Grave

Complete launch execution alongside your marketing division: strategy and timeline, press and influencer introductions, media drive programmes, dealer readiness and post-launch feedback loops.

Execution

Press, Influencer & Media Drive Programmes

Route planning, technical briefing packs, press fleet condition standards and on-the-day support so the vehicle performs exactly as intended in front of media and influencers.

Why It Matters

First impressions are made once

A launch that goes wrong in front of press or an unprepared dealer network is expensive to undo. Launch work is scoped around your marketing division's plan rather than replacing it, filling the technical, PDI and dealer-readiness gaps that marketing teams aren't built to own.

Works well paired with Vehicle Validation for brands launching a model that hasn't yet been proven on African roads, and with Dealer Development for launches into a growing network.

Planning a launch?

Bring me in early; launch readiness works best planned months out, not weeks.

Service 03 · Compliance & Warranty

Clean audits, cleared backlogs, compliant recalls

Built on certified national warranty auditor experience: homologation, warranty management, compliance audits and recall campaigns handled in full legislative compliance.

What's Included

Six areas of warranty & compliance discipline

Homologation

Vehicle Homologation Support

Hands-on guidance through South African homologation: NRCS approvals, SANS requirements, ECE documentation, M&M code registration and pre-homologation testing readiness.

Warranty Claims

Warranty Management & Aging Claims Resolution

Clearing aged warranty backlogs by dealing directly with OEMs: claim validation, technical justification, goodwill negotiation and recovery of outstanding payments.

Audits

Compliance, Audits & Dealer Standards

Warranty and motor-plan auditing, dealer standards assessments and audit-readiness preparation, built on certified national warranty auditor experience.

Plan Design

Warranty & Maintenance Plan Development

Designing warranty, service and maintenance plans for local markets: structure, cost modelling, EV battery warranty terms, extended warranty products and policy manuals.

Recalls

Recall & Safety Campaign Management

Professional rollout of vehicle recalls and technical service campaigns in full legislative compliance: Consumer Protection Act, NCC guidelines and NRCS liaison.

Parts

Parts Department Compliance & Performance

Parts operations audits, stock management discipline, obsolescence control and OEM parts compliance frameworks.

Why It Matters

Backlogs and failed audits are cash and reputation problems

Aged warranty claims tie up cash and draw OEM scrutiny; a failed audit puts dealer status at risk. This work goes straight at both: validating and negotiating claims directly with OEMs, and preparing dealers to pass the audits that matter.

Recall management is handled to the letter of the Consumer Protection Act and NCC guidelines, protecting both the brand and the consumer.

Facing an audit or a growing backlog?

The earlier this starts, the less it costs to fix.

Service 04 · Training & Customer Care

Training that transfers the capability, not just the slides

Qualified facilitator delivering OEM-grade product knowledge, service advisor excellence and customer care programmes across EV, NEV and ICE ranges.

What's Included

Four training & customer care programmes

Product Training

Product & Technical Training: EV, NEV & ICE

Qualified facilitator delivering OEM-grade product knowledge, high-voltage awareness and technical training across electric, hybrid and combustion ranges.

Advisor Training

Aftersales & Service Advisor Training

Frontline excellence programmes for service advisors, warranty clerks and aftersales managers: reception process, upselling with integrity and CSI improvement.

Customer Care

Customer Care Outsourcing & OEM-Level Training

Outsourced customer care operations and contact centre setup, plus professional training on product knowledge, technical query handling and CSI-driven communication.

Roadside

Roadside Assistance Collaboration & Rollout

Design and rollout of OEM roadside assistance programmes: coverage and SLA design, dispatch integration and EV-specific recovery protocols.

Why It Matters

Training only counts if it's still being used months later

Facilitated, not lectured: programmes are built around the reception process, technical query handling and CSI drivers your team deals with every day, so the habits stick after the engagement ends.

Particularly relevant for brands introducing EV or NEV ranges, where high-voltage awareness and new customer-facing questions require a step change from ICE-only training.

Rolling out a new range or team?

Training is most effective planned alongside launch or onboarding, not after problems appear.

Plan the Training
Service 05 · EV & Infrastructure

Honest range figures and charging that actually works

Real-world EV testing and charging infrastructure rollout aligned to SANS, IEC and NRCS standards, for brands that need local proof, not lab numbers.

What's Included

Two core EV disciplines, plus battery care

EV Testing

EV Compliance, Range & Charging Testing

Real-world EV range validation, AC/DC charging and interoperability testing, charge-curve and thermal behaviour verification aligned to SANS, IEC and NRCS.

Charging Infra

EV Charging Infrastructure Rollout

Planning and executing charger deployment: site assessment, load evaluation, charger specification, installation compliance and CoC.

Battery Care

EV Battery State-of-Charge & Storage Management

Structured battery maintenance for EVs at bond stores, ports and dealer stock: state-of-charge management, 12V and high-voltage battery care and dispatch-ready condition reporting.

Why It Matters

Charging infrastructure is only half the readiness picture

Lab-rated range figures rarely survive Highveld altitude, coastal heat or real South African traffic. Testing produces range and charging figures you can defend publicly, and infrastructure rollout is planned around the sites and load realities of the market you're entering.

Battery care matters as much as headline range; vehicles sitting in bond stores or on dealer lots need active state-of-charge management to arrive at the customer in the condition they left the factory.

Bringing an EV or NEV brand to market?

Range, charging and infrastructure readiness take longer to prove than most timelines allow; start early.

Start EV Readiness
Service 06 · Operations & Systems

Find the bottleneck. Fix it. Prove it in the numbers.

Structured root cause analysis, WIP and debtor recovery, systems rollouts and data analytics that turn workshop operations profitable again.

What's Included

Four operational disciplines

Root Cause

Workshop Optimisation & Root Cause Analysis

Structured root cause analysis to find and eliminate workshop bottlenecks, improving throughput, productivity and first-time-fix rates.

WIP Recovery

WIP Resolution, Debtors & Payment Recovery

Efficient closure of outstanding work-in-progress: aged WIP analysis, warranty invoicing, debtor account resolution and write-off minimisation.

Systems

National Systems & DMS Rollouts

Planning and executing national rollouts of new online systems, dealer management platforms and OEM portals, from pilot dealers to full network adoption.

Analytics

Data Analytics & Market Intelligence

Sales and aftersales analytics: market share analysis, segment intelligence, dealer performance dashboards and decision-ready reporting.

Why It Matters

Falling first-time-fix rates and rising WIP rarely fix themselves

Root cause analysis finds the actual bottleneck (a process gap, a training gap, a systems gap) rather than treating the symptom with another initiative. Aged WIP and debtor balances are worked down directly, not just reported on.

Systems and DMS rollouts are planned with pilot dealers first, so problems surface and get fixed before a national rollout amplifies them.

Workshop throughput or WIP getting away from you?

Service 07 · Network & Customer Experience

Networks built to standard, escalations resolved fast

Dealer network planning and appointment standards, paired with rapid resolution of escalated customer complaints that threaten brand reputation.

What's Included

Two areas of dealer & customer experience work

Network

Dealer Network Development

Network planning, dealer appointment standards, aftersales infrastructure setup and performance management.

Frontline

Frontline & Customer Experience Resolution

Rapid resolution of escalated customer complaints and frontline breakdowns: protecting brand reputation, restoring CSI and embedding processes that prevent recurrence.

Why It Matters

A network is only as strong as its weakest dealer

New-entrant brands scaling a dealer network in South Africa need appointment standards and infrastructure setup that hold up under OEM scrutiny from day one. Established networks need a way to stop an escalated complaint from becoming a reputation problem before it's contained.

Frontline resolution work doesn't just close the immediate case; it embeds the process change that prevents the same complaint recurring across the network.

Scaling a network or managing an escalation?

Both move faster with an outside pair of hands who's done it before.

Advisory for international OEMs entering South Africa and Sub-Saharan Africa: specialist fluency in Chinese OEM culture paired with legacy-OEM process rigour.

Intelligence

Market Intelligence & Regulatory Landscape

Competitive landscape assessment, regulatory and homologation pathway guidance, and realistic timeline planning for entering the South African market.

Execution

Coordinated Entry: Testing, Homologation, Network & Launch

Sequencing vehicle validation, homologation, dealer network setup and launch so entry milestones land in the right order, not in isolation.

Why It Matters

Market entry fails on sequencing, not ambition

Most entry problems aren't strategic; they're operational: homologation started too late, a dealer network built before the vehicle was proven, or a launch timed ahead of parts availability. Having worked inside both legacy OEMs and Chinese new entrants building networks from zero, I help sequence entry so each milestone actually supports the next.

This service typically draws on Vehicle Validation, Warranty Consulting and Launch Support as the entry plan comes together.

Considering the South African market?

An initial conversation can map out what entry actually requires, before you commit resources.
